MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Oct. 5, 2026) — Myrtle Beach News, the reader-funded accountability news outlet serving Horry and Georgetown counties, today announced its endorsement of Curtis Loftis for South Carolina State Treasurer in the Nov. 3 general election.
Loftis, a Republican, has served as State Treasurer since 2011 and is seeking a fifth term. He faces Democratic nominee Vincent Coe.
“Our job is to hold government accountable, and we expect the same from the people we put in charge of the public’s money,” said David Hucks, publisher of Myrtle Beach News. For more than 15 years, Curtis Loftis has been willing to challenge Columbia’s political establishment on behalf of taxpayers, even when it cost him politically. That kind of independence is rare, and it matters.“
The State Treasurer endorsement does not ignore the controversy of the past two years. A state investigation and outside audit found that a reported $1.8 billion surplus did not exist and stemmed from a years-long accounting error dating to the state’s transition to new computer systems in the 2010s. The state Senate voted 33-8 to remove Loftis, but the House did not take up the measure, and he remained in office.
“We’ve followed that story closely, and readers deserve to know we weighed it seriously,” Hucks said. “In the end, voters, not legislative leaders, should decide who serves as treasurer. Having weighed the full record, we believe Curtis Loftis remains the strongest choice to protect South Carolina’s financial interests.“

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. Voters can confirm their registration and polling location at scvotes.gov.
