IMPD’s new tool aims to streamline info exchange process for drivers in minor crashes

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police have announced the launch of a new driving tool to improve roadside safety and save drivers time in the moments after minor car accidents.

The “Driver Exchange Tool” went live Monday.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the idea behind the tool is like this: If you’re involved in a minor vehicle accident with no injuries, Indianapolis dispatchers will send you a “Driver Exchange Link” to your phone instead of having you wait for an officer to arrive.

“This easy-to-use tool gives you everything you need to file an insurance claim,” the department noted. “It keeps you moving and allows our officers to stay focused on higher-priority calls.”

If you’re involved in a “minor, property-damage-only” crash, here’s what IMPD suggests you do:

  • Safely pull over to the side of the road or into a parking lot.
  • Call the IMPD nonemergency line at 317-327-3811.
  • Open the Driver Exchange Link sent by dispatch.
  • Follow the instructions to exchange information with the other driver.
  • Get back on the road!

The exchanged information can be accessed for free online at CrashDocs.org.
